Neural Story Singing Christmas

“Lots to decorate the room. The Christmas tree is filled with flowers. I swear its Christmas eve. I hope that’s what you say. The best Christmas present in the world is a blessing. I’ve always been there for the rest of our lives. A hundred and a half hour ago. I’m glad to meet you. I can hear the music coming up from the hall. A fairy tale. A Christmas tree. There’s lots and lots and lots of flowers.”

An A.I. trained in melody, lyrics and image interpretation has been used by researchers to perform ‘neural karaoke’- creating songs from digital photographs. Here, the A.I. responded to an image of a Christmas tree, and the result is a little creepy. Described by Clayton Purdom at A.V. Club:

“Why the fuck is there music coming from the hall? Who is out there, and what are they doing?… These are not lyrics, they are the moans of the damned, trapped between this world and something beyond it, just conscious enough to know they are not at rest…. part flesh and part void, yearning for only the peaceful oblivion of death this yuletide.”
